Back on track!

Yeap, I haven’t posted here for a while – actually there were 2 months of silence, wow! I haven’t even looked through the feed – and same with Twitter, Behance… All my creative social networks were put on hold. Why? The reason is quite simple… I WAS LAZY.) πŸ˜› Ok, not just lazy but also busy, tired, exhausted – but mostly lazy. And I don’t really like the effect my laziness is doing on me so I guess I’ll try to organize myself more – that was #3 in my New Year Resolutions and it’s been 6 month of 2016 already so I’d better start DOING things πŸ˜‰

In my last post I was talking about participating in Arsenal Book Festival 2016 – and I did it! It was kinda fun but I have to admit that this year’s festival was too stressful and exhausting for me so I’m not actually sure I will try to get in next year. There were some issues with organization and preparation – in the end I was so tired of lack of sleep and lots of people that I started to simply giveaway my stuff – and that’s never a good sign πŸ˜‰ I’ve managed to beat off the costs and earn a bit but still it was too big of a stress.

There’s me – all happy and inspired)) My friend took this photo secretly, I wasn’t prepared!

Another public event I took part in was the 2016 Kyiv Comic Con – and THAT was fun! I didn’t have a table there – still I participated in the comics contest. And you know what? I WON! πŸ˜€ ))) That was a huge surprise: I didn’t expect it and literally stood speechless for a minute or two when the judges announced my name. My comics was printed in almanac and I won a cool graphic tablet! I was in shock for a few days after that and – believe it or not – haven’t even tried the tablet yet! Guess I still think it was just a dream)

The comics tells the story of a poor tired freelance illustrator – ME.)) πŸ˜›

As for another success – I’ve managed to finish a rather big work project I’ve taken in May – so yay! (I’m not sure I can show you anything.) However I’ve already plunged into another long-going one so..) No vacation for me! Well, no, I’m happy I’m working, but I feel such an urge to do some personal art right now that I really can’t wait for this project to be over, haha. πŸ˜› There are 34 large illustrations, about 60 of small ones… I’ve created 3 large ones so far so the end is near! *cries* Meanwhile I try to find at least a bit of time to draw something out of my head – and that’s how I rediscovered colored pencils. I enjoy drawing with them so much! I have 12 of Raffine (<3) and 36 of Faber-Castell (school edition – baaaaad) and I really want to buy more! More and more and more…) But I have to control myself. The plan is to sell at least one drawing and spend earned money on new stuff. So I’d better start drawing πŸ˜‰

I just draw houses all the time πŸ˜‰

That’s all for today – but I really hope I’ll write here more often. Meanwhile I’d be happy to know how you’ve been doing – so, is there anyone here? πŸ™‚

Arsenal Book Festival 2015. Nostalgia.)

Ok, today’s a sh*tty day so I desperately need to think about something nice. x_x

And as everybody in the international illustrative community keeps talking about Bologna Book Fair, I thought it would be nice to recall that one and only book festival I actually took part in – Ukrainian Arsenal Book Festival – since Bologna is still a big pink dream for me πŸ˜‰ Besides, I keep calling to mind my festival experience these days as I’ve already sent an application to participate this year also, yay! This Book Festival is a really big thing in Ukraine so – fingers crossed! Obviously, every free minute I have is spent thinking of all the fun stuff I can make&sell this year – perfect time to recall all the fun stuff I made&sold last year, right? πŸ™‚

So, everything started with preparing my products) As always, I’ve managed to print everything just the day before the start of the Festival – I really have to be more organized this time) *if I get in, of course!)) I’m just too optimistic)))* I thought the pile was huge – however I had to print more during the Festival, it was a big surprise!

And here’s my table! I’ve made a cute bee to stand out among all the artists and I really want to use it this year also) *still optimistic))* Because it’s cuuuute! And there’s my name on it πŸ˜‰ As you can see I’ve printed a bunch of greeting card designs and bookmarks + brought some handmade stuff I got left. But the real surprise and success were….

…the PU-U-UPS! ^_^ I had to print more and more of them several times – guess, this year *oh, come on!))* I’ll have to print cats also, but shhh, it’s a secret! πŸ˜‰ Basically it’s a paper figure scheme of a funny dog, 6 different designs – nothing too complicated) But kids – and not only kids! – loved them!)) It was so amazing to see random people smiling as they looked at my table – guess, it is the greatest reward for my work πŸ™‚

Moreover, I had to hold a master-class during the Festival – it was a nightmare, but, I guess, a useful one) Actually, I don’t remember much about it, I was too nervous)) And yeap, that’s me trying to animateΒ Malevich’s black square – don’t ask))

So, in brief, that 5 days of the Festival were VERY exhausting …and VERY cool!)) This year the participation fee actually doubled *oh cruel world…*, but still I have that strange irresistible urge to take part. So I hope I’ll eventually get in – wish me luck πŸ™‚

But as I wait for the answer, I guess I’ll return to my ordinary commissions, because as the say “business before pleasure“! Or maybe cup of tea before sleep? πŸ˜‰ That definitely sounds better! πŸ˜›

The Thing about the Thing for Things

First of all I have to tell you: I don’t learn from my mistakes.

Brain: “Let’s make something quick and easy, Zhe!”

Hands: “Of course! How about this strange thing to contain other strange things to put on the shelf with the previous strange things we’ve made? And let’s cover ourselves in glue and paint, yay!”

Whatever.

So i’ve decided to reuse my old hand cream jar. Here it is.

The Tale of Six Fails and One Win

It’s finally friday – I mean Fri-DIY! πŸ™‚ Guess you see now what I’ve decided to make my weekly feature – Do-It-Yourself project! Cute and useful out of old and needless – what can be better? Hey, people on Pinterest do that all the time!

Yeah, right.

When I was making handmade greeting cards I’d always worshiped the principle: Handmade Doesn’t Have to Be Neat! It’s not really important for lines to be straight – the soul and charm of the thing made with your hands is what important. That seemed just a principle then – but now I can see clearly: I’m just not capable of neatness. So welcome to the world of MESSY HANDMADE!))) You can Do It Yourself – but Do You Dare?! πŸ˜‰

However everything looked very promising from the start.

The Flare of Nostalgia and One Blue Giraffe

Meet Arnold – my crazy pet giraffe. Quite a low-maintenance pet, I gladly admit. πŸ˜‰ Small, silent and not picky in food – the perfect helper) But what does he help me with, you ask?

It’s been a couple of days since my last post so my day started anxiously: I need to write something, but what? Since my creative personal projects are still on New-Year-and-other-winter-holidays pause and my work commission’s still in progress – so nothing to show yet – I’ve decided to call to mind some of the things I’m already *and STILL!)* kinda proud of: my handmade stuff. πŸ™‚

Making handmade greeting cards has always been a dream and pleasure for me. Although I didn’t manage to develop this hobby into a high profitable business I still don’t loose hope to do it someday πŸ˜‰ *somewhere, over the rainbow…))* It’s not actual scrapbooking, it’s not very neat and tidy *ok, sometimes it’s just sloppy))* – but that was something I really tried to put my soul into – so I hope you can find a tiny sloppy bit of me in every card πŸ™‚

That’s just a quick glance on my handmade stuff – most of my cards can be found in my good old Livejournal – but it’s in ukrainian.) however, photos don’t need translation, I guess πŸ˜‰

Wait, so what’s up with Arnold? πŸ™‚ Does he hold the paper while I’m trying to cut in cleanly? Is he really good with color combinations? Can he tie perfect bows? Well, I can tell you how he helps me. He’s such a cute weirdo – he inspires me, everyday. But shhh, it’s a professional secret. πŸ˜‰

2016 starts now!

…well, it started two days ago but whatever) Point is, now it’s time to make some New Year Resolutions! First time for me: lots of expectations, ideas and plans but still no confidence that I’ll manage to do anything of that list at all) But hollow promises – that’s what NYR are for – so let’s do it!

  1. I’ll work on my stock portfolios very hard – and I mean it! Analysis, themed sets, templates and uploading tricks – I want to do it all. Still have no clue how to do it properly, but I know that it should be my No.1 priority, so wish me luck πŸ™‚
  2. No working on my commissions under the wire! Yeap, last night before deadline – is a wonderful inspirational time, but I really have to work on my schedule: most of the time not sleeping at night sucks.
  3. And more about my schedule… well, there has to be one πŸ™‚ At least particular days for particular spheres of my work – except for Commission Hell Days, of course *that special time I can only think of deadlines and satisfied clients*
  4. There are some handmade ideas I want to carry out. It’s a secret, so no more comments)
  5. I will READ BOOKS. Sounds pathetic – I do read books sometimes – but I definitely have to read more. Guess it’s time to make a nice what-to-read list on goodreads (54 friends there and zero “books read” in profile – well, that is pathetic))
  6. I’ll write this blog! Well, that’s the toughest one) Usually I start a blog and forget about in two or three weeks – but I truly hope this one will last. I’m enrolling in “Blogging 101: Zero to Hero” course in two days so at least for three weeks my conscience won’t let me give up this place – that could be a record πŸ™‚

Guess that will do for now – no point in making too many hollow promises at once πŸ˜‰ So before I decide to make any changes to the NYR list I’d better go and have some dinner – because the world is a much better place when there are sandwiches in it!

Happy holidays and stay Ho-ho-ho!
